WE NEED EACH OTHER

2 Peter 3:13-18- “But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells. So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction. Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure position. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”

As believers, you and I are called to challenge one another to mature in Christ. This process has no end until we see Christ face to face.

If you have kids, we all probably have one thing in common: When they were babies they started out drinking milk or formula (and screaming their heads off at 2 a.m., but that’s a different story for a different day). Notice, that our kids did not start out by eating a porterhouse. But, a few months later, the Gerber collection was ushered in. Remember that “mush”? Mmmmm, the smell! But they loved it, didn’t they?! At least it was better than milk . . . Then, soon after that, a few teeth started coming in and it was time for dry Cheerios! I am still finding them in my couch cushions to this day! Not long after, more teeth. Time for some serious solid foods, and away we went! Wouldn’t you agree though, that there would be something extremely wrong if at 15 and 12 years old, my girls were still eating only Gerber strained peas and dry Cheerios for every meal?

Well, as believers we need to spur each other on in Christ to move to the meat! If we don’t, we’ll stay spiritual babes. Feeding each other means encouraging one another to continually go deeper in our relationship Christ.

I failed swimming lessons so I am not the best one to be giving an illustration like this, but, when one starts to swim, it’s very rare they start out in the deep end. Typically, unless you’re Michael Phelps or something, you start in the shallow end and gradually progress into the deep end. Once you venture out into the deep end through and get a taste of it, you feel liberated, and before long, you are swimming in the deepest part of the pool! Such it is in our spiritual walks.

Max Lucado said: “When our deepest desire is not the things of God, or a favor from God, but God Himself, we cross a threshold.”

What’s holding you back from crossing this threshold today?

By God’s grace, are you and I helping one another to cross this threshold?
