OUT OF NOTHING

Genesis 1:1, the majestic opening statement of the God breathed Holy Scriptures: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” It is precisely this weighty declaration that points to the unmistakable truth that God created everything out of nothing. Indeed, only 3 possible options exist when dealing with this notion:

1. In the beginning nothing existed, neither mass, nor energy, nor the Almighty. Nothing, nothing, simply nothing! Logic however, screams that nothing comes from nothing!

2. Something existed, but that something was impersonal. This means that there was an effect (the universe) without a cause. As common sense tells us, every effect must have a cause equal to or greater than itself.

3. The only possible option that makes sense is that, the universe was created by an uncaused First Cause greater than itself. Time, space, and the universe have not always existed, but God has always existed, and God’s existence is the cause for the existence of all else that exists. God indeed created everything out of nothing.

Therefore, can we apply the truth that God created everything from nothing in our own lives? The answer is, yes, in every way!

Psalm 33:6-11:

6 By the word of the Lord the heavens were made,their starry host by the breath of His mouth. 7 He gathers the waters of the sea into jars;He puts the deep into storehouses. 8 Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the people of the world revere Him. 9 For He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded, and it stood firm. 10 The Lord foils the plans of the nations; He thwarts the purposes of the peoples. 11 But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever,the purposes of His heart through all generations.

• BECAUSE GOD CREATED EVERYTHING FROM NOTHING, WE CAN SEE HOW WE ARE TO RESPOND TO HIM (V6).

God didn’t lift a proverbial ‘finger’ when He created the universe. He breathed it out (v6). Does this create within you and me a sense of awe, and absolute reverence? Hebrews 11:3 says- “By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible (meaning, out of nothing).” The God who spoke and the universe lept at His command, is the same God who stands ready to be involved in every facet of our lives.

• BECAUSE GOD CREATED EVERYTHING FROM NOTHING, WE CAN SEE THE INCREDIBLE SCIENCE AND PRECISION OF THE UNIVERSE (V7-9).

Consider the force of gravity. If it were stronger or weaker by just one part out of 10 to the hundredth power (that’s a 1 with 100 zeroes after it), the universe would not-could not-support intelligent life! The fine-tuning of the universe cannot reasonably be attributed to random chance because this would actually produce a life-prohibiting universe rather than a life-sustaining one! The only plausible source of the fine-tuning of the universe is an eternal, transcendent, incalculably powerful and intelligent personal Mind, whom we call the God of the Bible!

• BECAUSE GOD CREATED EVERYTHING FROM NOTHING, WE CAN SEE HOW HE HAS PLACED ETERNITY IN OUR HEARTS (V10-11).

This life is not a period it is a comma. Being His children, Christ-followers look forward to spending eternity with Him now and forever. We have the assurance that although this earth will fade away, and our bodies will fail He is preparing a place for us to spend with Him for all eternity as we speak.
