I'm excited to announce the launch of my new YouTube channel, Becoming Rooted and Renewed.
This channel was born out of years of personal struggle, spiritual growth, pastoral ministry, and a healing journey that fundamentally changed my life.
My hope is that it will become a place of encouragement, understanding, and transformation for Christ-followers seeking emotional and spiritual healing.
The first episode, What If Your Anxiety Isn't Really Yours? | My Story of Healing Through Family Systems & Faith, is now available.
In this opening episode, I share my personal story and explain why Family Systems Theory has become such an important part of my understanding of emotional and spiritual growth.
For much of my life, I believed chronic anxiety, guilt, shame, people-pleasing, perfectionism, fear of abandonment, and emotional reactivity were simply part of who I was.
I assumed they were personality traits.
I assumed this was simply how I was wired.
I assumed everyone carried life the way I did.
Over time, however, I began to realize that many of these patterns were deeply connected to the dysfunctional and narcissistic family environment in which I was raised.
What I thought was my personality was often learned survival behavior.
This discovery began a journey that eventually led me to Family Systems Theory, introduced to me through my wife Sarah and the work of Jerry Wise.
What followed was one of the most transformative seasons of my life.
Family Systems Theory, developed by Dr. Murray Bowen, helps us understand that individuals cannot be fully understood apart from the emotional systems in which they live, especially their family of origin.
Many of us spend years trying to solve symptoms without understanding the system that produced them.
We wonder why we struggle with anxiety.
We wonder why we constantly seek approval.
We wonder why we feel responsible for everyone else's emotions.
We wonder why guilt and shame seem to follow us wherever we go.
Family Systems Theory helped me see that many of these patterns did not originate with me. They were emotional adaptations developed within a family system.
That insight changed everything.
While Family Systems Theory is not Christian in origin, I believe many of its observations align remarkably well with biblical truth.
Scripture is filled with family systems.
From Abraham's family to Jacob's family, from David's household to the struggles of the early church, the Bible repeatedly reveals how emotional processes, relational dysfunction, favoritism, fear, control, anxiety, and brokenness affect people and communities.
Yet God works in the midst of imperfect families.
My goal is not simply to teach Family Systems Theory.
My goal is to explore these concepts through a distinctly Christian lens and help believers discover how emotional maturity and spiritual maturity often grow together.
Future episodes will explore topics such as:
Narcissistic family systems
Chronic anxiety
People-pleasing
Perfectionism
Parentification
Over-functioning
Emotional reactivity
Differentiation
Family-of-origin dynamics
False self vs. true self
Identity in Christ
Emotional and spiritual maturity
We'll combine biblical teaching, personal testimony, practical application, and Family Systems principles to help uncover unhealthy emotional patterns and pursue healing through Christ.
Many of the ideas discussed on the channel come from a manuscript I've written titled:
Pulling Up the Roots: Family Systems from a Christ-Centered Perspective.
Although the manuscript is currently unpublished, it serves as the foundation for much of the content I'll be sharing.
My desire is to help Christians understand that healing is not about blaming our families.
It's about seeing our family systems clearly.
It's about understanding what shaped us.
It's about identifying unhealthy patterns.
And most importantly, it's about discovering what God wants to heal.
If you've ever struggled with anxiety, people-pleasing, perfectionism, fear of abandonment, guilt, shame, or the lingering effects of a dysfunctional family system, I believe this channel will resonate with you.
I invite you to watch the first episode and join me on this journey.
Because while our past may have shaped us, it does not have to define us.
The person God created you to be is still there.
Perhaps wounded.
Perhaps buried beneath years of unhealthy programming.
But through God's grace, healing is possible.
As I often say: Jesus saved my soul. Understanding Family Systems Theory has helped save my life. I hope you'll join me as we become more rooted in Christ and renewed in mind, heart, and relationship.
